This is truly one from the vaults. In 1993 I had just signed my first significant publishing deal with International Songs/Leosong and the first thing they suggested doing was commissioning a solo piano album, an idea which unsurprisingly I thought most excellent. So I gathered together a bunch of tunes I'd either been developing over the previous eight or so years as I grew as a player doing small gigs around London or had written recently with the vague thought of a solo record in mind. After trying a few studio pianos out I ended up going to Sarm East in Oct '93 where there was the most delectable Bosendorfer.....my old pal and award winning engineer Sean Chenery came along to make sure it all sounded ok, both sonically and from an emotional back up point of view. Knocked it out in a day! There was a lot of pent up piano playing waiting to happen! I don't usually like to look back too much at old music I've done but.....came across a copy of the CD when doing a spring clean of my studio recently, put in the car system, went for a drive and was pleasantly surprised to actually rather enjoy listening to it. There are a few bits and pieces compositionally that show my relative youth but on the whole....it's the same licks and tricks I still do! Interesting lesson in how perhaps we all have only one or two ways to have a musical conversation.
